OTL teaching photography to 3rd grade students

Every Wednesday morning OTL staff visits Explorer Elementary to teach 3rd grade students about photography skills, workshops, and activities. During the last two weeks students have learned about vantage points and the elements of design.
Students had the opportunity to identify vintage points and elements of design from different pictures.

Students were asked to look for objects in their classroom that would identify some of the elements of design they have learned.

Art From the Heart

Immigration Project

Students traced their families back as far as they could, conducted research, and then took pictures to symbolize their culture and background. They wrote "Where I'm From" poems, and presented them from the perspective of living in their ancestral home country, then traveling to the U.S., and finally from their own perspective on what it's like for them in America now.

Pictures of Hope

Students take pictures of what "hope" looks like to them.

Water In Focus

The 5th graders went to the Tijuana River Estuary to take a closer look and snap some creative photos illustrating water conservation and concerns.

Students get musical!

Students practice, "One by One," a song they learned through their cross-cultural exchange project with students in Africa. They performed it at Outside the Lens's Walk the Watershed Event alongside guest musicians.
